Planning is estential in creating a music magazine. From my target audience i researched the sort of music magazines they would look at which are currently available on the market. One of them being ''Top of the Pops''. To understand more of what the target audience would look at, i looked at ''Top of the Pops'' and analysed it. I have attached the image of the front cover to show the initial idea of what has been analysed:

Analysis of Top of the Pops contents

One unique factor of TOTP (Top of the Pops) is that the contents page is the front cover. This may be because the target audience of TOTP is a young audience and a contents page will not come across as interesting, also by using the front cover as the contents it will allow the reader to find there top stories very easily.

Mise – en – scene
Costume: casual boy clothes, laid back, boy band
Lighting: normal lighting, bright
Actors: Boy band, happy, smiling, posy, casual standing
Make – up: no make up, normal, natural
Props: none
Setting: none

Music Artist Profiles
‘OMG! It’s the Jonas Brothers! Why the Camp Rock boys are ready to date you!’, exciting, hearts (love), school girl crushes. These are all elements on the page that would indicate what the target audience is, in this case young teenage girls.

Layout and style of language
Informal, conversational, loud, talking to reader, teen talk, quite cramped, pictures close to each other, speech bubbles, teenage humour, image over masthead, website and institution very clear, shows theres are not a lot of pages which is appealing to a young reader.

Any Music Genre conventions?
Pop music – Jonas Brothers, Leona Lewis, McFly. Other genres like R ‘n’ B and Hip Hop – Rihanna and Chris Brown also includes musicals such as High School Musical (Zac Efron) and Camp Rock. Also reality competitions contestants, Leona Lewis and Leon Jackson.

Special Features and Articles in this edition
‘OMG! It’s the Jonas Brothers, Exclusive pics – 24 hours with Zac!, McFly exclusive ‘’Our Hidden Heartache’’

Regular sections of the magazine
Your instant makeover, 33 new bargains!, Quiz! Will you be friends forever?

Any other interesting additions?
Cute! Who’s the baby? – Asking questions, showing us a picture but not telling us who it is (persuasive), normal reality pictures of celebs but turning it into a story: Eew, Rihanna! It must be love!

How does your analysis reveal the magazine’s target reader profile?
Use of language is younger ‘OMG!’ teenage ‘code’ talk and from the use of colours which are bright and bold. Also there is a picture of a cute dog and speech bubbles which would look appealing to a younger audience. The artists on the front cover are artists who are most popular amongst young girls such as The Jonas Brothers and McFly.

What overall techniques are used to make you read the complete magazine?
USP’s such as ’33 new bargains’ also it asks questions such as ‘who’s the baby ‘in which you would have to read the magazine to find out. Also by telling us there is ‘exclusive Pics’ this is a way of giving the reader the impression that you lust read and look.

Before starting the music magazine task, we had learnt about the general connotations of music magazine covers. To show my understanding i have annotated a magazine cover:
